The Old Globe Theater commissioned footwear from us for their summer Shakespeare Festival. They had imported a director from the Royal Shakespeare Company in England with his costume mistress for the shows which gave us a bad case of nerves. It was really interesting and a little intimidating. to get to work with someone who has all the reference samples in her backyard. The new style that we had not done before was the classic two color English riding boot. In case you’re wondering – George III was one of the plays. She was looking for something authentic looking and we accidentally stumbled on to it. The boots were made without the hard toe box for the fittings, which turned out to be exactly the look she was after. The job was completed on time for dress rehearsals and left us all as little breathless. The costume mistress was thrilled – not bad for the colonies. Now it’s time to get back to normal – until the next time.

Renaissance Fencer’s gloves

It looks like I can officially add a padded glove for the SCA fighters to what we can do. I’ve had several fighters test them in practice sessions and they’ve been pleased. Both the heavy weapon fighters and the fencers found them satisfactory. They’ll be available in standard black and brown with the options for colored cuffs. A coat of arms can be appliqued on to the cuffs for a very personal, custom look. They will have the look of a Elizabethan gauntlet, but will work for time periods from the 14th century through the 18th century. The only remaining problems is to scale the sizes for men and then to work on creating them for women.

Designing Boots for Both an Elizabethian Woman and an 18th Century Pirate

The challenge is to design a pair of pirate boots that can be worn with Renaissance garb at SCA events, Renn Faires, and at Pirate events. Jumping two centuries with one pair of boots! In addition the woman is a vendor at those events and needs to be on her feet all day making comfort the primary goal. We are starting with a translation of a pair of 16th century French slippers to model the toes after, then adding a boot top with cuff details to match the toe. The idea being that the toe will peak out from under her skirts and look like a fancy slipper and the boots can have pants tucked into the top for a swashbuckling pirate wench. The mock up is on it’s way for a fitting and critique. We’ll see if we scored in a couple of days.
